In this week’s episode the world renowned neurosurgeon, Mr Jeelani shares his story with us. We begin from his early teenage years when he had to leave his family in uncertainty to come to the UK. Exploring his mindset and journey from studying medicine to becoming a leading consultant at the world famous GOSH, where he currently holds the world’s largest experience in the separation of Craniopagus Twins.
We discuss the importance of learning, mentorship and the demands of a career in Medicine. Mr Jeelani shares some of the difficulties he has faced in his career including complex surgical cases, media attention and operating in foreign countries. We end by identifying the opportunities and satisfaction medicine provides are endless.
Mr Jeelani is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He was ranked in The Time’s Magazine’s top 100 surgeons in the UK in 2011 and the top 100 paediatric specialists in the UK in 2012. He was Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at GOSH from 2012 until 2018.
He invented CranioXpand, a cranial spring distractor system in 2008, and later on established FaceValue. He founded Interface Health Solutions (IHS), co-founded Klay BioTech platform and in 2018, founded Gemini Untwined a charity dedicated to the research, support, and treatment of craniopagus twins worldwide, as well as other complex craniofacial and neurosurgical conditions.

Imran is a medical doctor and co-founder of Nye Health. He holds degrees in molecular biology, medicine, public health and education from Oxford and Harvard. Following a short stint in clinical practice, Imran left to join McKinsey and Co in London for three years before starting Nye Health.

Dr Will Gao trained as medical doctor at University College London. Whilst a medical student, he co-founded Suvera, a health-tech company centred around proactively maintaining humans in good health and Mindful Medic, a social enteprise geared towards supporting medical professionals with their wellbeing.
Will is one of few medical students in the UK to raise venture capital funding whilst studying and is also one of the youngest appointed NHS England Clinical Entrepeneurs.

We talk about his career transitions from the NHS to industry roles such as Clinical Fellow to the NHS National Medical Director, Bupa’s Clinical Lead for Digital Health and IBM Watson Health.
We discover the founding story of ’Doctorprenuers’, the reality of entrepreneurship and if it really is something we should all pursue, why he believes every clinician should complete foundation training and the power of mentorship. Avi touches upon the life of a clinician in startups, consultancy, corporations, and his new role as Associate partner in IBM’s Global Business Services division.
Dr Avi Mehra is an Associate Partner for Healthcare and Life Sciences at IBM and Co-Founder of Doctorpreneurs. In 2014, he joined Bupa as a Clinical Fellow to the NHS National Medical Director, after which he was appointed as Bupa’s Clinical Lead for Digital Health. In 2016, Avi joined IBM’s newly formed healthcare technology and AI business unit, IBM Watson Health, where he held multiple global leadership roles before recently taking on a new role as an Associate Partner in IBM’s Global Business Services division.
Avi is also a Fellow at the Faculty of Clinical Informatics, advisor/mentor to digital health startups and mentor on the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme.

Prof. Azeem Majeed is a Professor of Primary Care and Public Health, and Head of the Department of Primary Care & Public Health at Imperial College London. He is accredited in both General Practice and Public Health Medicine alongside NIHR Senior Investigator. He played an international role in public health and primary care as co-director of the World Health Organization (WHO). Prior to moving to Imperial College London, he worked for seven years at the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS).

We hear the story behind Locum’s Nest and the challenges they faced in order to become the leading mobile app connecting doctors to locum work in hospitals. Nick shares a brief insight into his passion and journey to medicine. He shares the life of locum doctors before his app came to market. We spend some time discussing the importance of technology and why superior design is key for the future of healthcare. Nick also shares why he loves his role at the company and the variety of work he does on a week to week basis.

Dr Nicholas Andreou gained his medical qualifications at Imperial College School of Medicine and Business School where in addition to his medical studies also studied Healthcare Management. In between his shifts at the Emergency Department he taught himself product design and developed the blueprints for the Locum's Nest app. Apart from his day-to-day activities as Locum's Nest's Co-Founder he sub-specialises in managing Locum's Nest's entire suite of products, from strategic direction to product development, activities which have earned Locum's Nest awards such as Major Innovation of the Year and Productivity app of the year.
