This week’s guest talks about the power of saying yes to opportunities and why going the extra mile is so important. He delves into societal pressures experienced by high achieving students and how learning digital marketing increased sales by 5-fold in his fathers business. Abdul-Rahman is a medical student studying at UCL with an iBSc in Neuroscience. From a young age, he was exposed to entrepreneurship through his father’s business. During university he helped lead the @UCL Arab & North African society and worked with a VC-backed social enterprise helping revolutionise the way people give money to causes. More recently, he has set up an exciting and innovative new platform 'Medmentor'.
This platform aims create access to medicine by connecting current and aspiring medical students to provide affordable tailored mentoring. Uniquely Abdul was also the last of the Youth Delegation to the European Parliament in Brussels.

🎙 This week’s guest is a British Bangladeshi scientist determined to break down barriers in science for women. We discuss her PhD journey as a virologist, the misconceptions with regards to a PhD and explore the extremely hidden competitive nature in world of academia. Crucially we discuss the barriers young women face passionately pursuing a career and have to face the question of balancing life.
Tahfima is a HIV virologist at UCL, her research focuses on the HIV virus which remains a top global health problem. Tafhima is investigating the interaction between HIV and the cell intrinsic innate immune system, to better understand how the virus evades these defence mechanisms and establishes infection. As an early career scientist, she has realised that being a BAME woman in academia is rare and can be challenging. She is interested in empowering women in the context of education and health. Aside from her PhD research, she is also conducting maternal health research with MAA charity and is also starting up projects to increase visibility of women in STEM.

Dr Mahfuj T Ahmed is a GPST1 in London, graduating from King’s College London. He is a Trustee and Director at Al Isharah, a charity that leads on making Islam accessible for the deaf. He founded Jothno - WeCare, a charity organisation which aims to develop primary care in the rural areas in third world countries. Through his social media platform @slaveandoc he aims to portray the life of a medic, balancing faith and medicine through his posts and anecdotes.

This week we interview Yasmin, a final year medical student who has taken a year out to study a computer science master’s at UCL. Tune in to find out what made her pivot towards learning how to code; the role women play in a tech world dominated by men. Hear the struggles she has faced on her pursuit to making an impact and being a champion for underrepresented women across the nation.
She is currently working on a healthcare project with GOSH and a MedEd startup. Working with the UCL Medical School and ex-president of the RCP she is running the first ‘Emerging Women Leaders’ course to encourage female clinicians to pursue leadership roles. Not only this, she has recently launched a muslim women in tech network (Tech Muslimahs) to bring together this community.
