We discuss the early stages of SMILE, the obstacles they faced and the viral growth to lecturing more than 20,000+ students with more than 1,000+ students tuning in for each lecture.
We share their medical journey from the beginning right from medical school to becoming junior doctors. Professor Asif Ahmed is the founder and CEO of MirZyme Therapeutics, an early-stage biopharmaceutical company with globally granted patents to develop drugs to prevent preeclampsia. He is a British biomedical scientist and has discovered two protective pathways to stop preeclampsia during pregnancy. He founded the Aston Medical School in 2014, which was the first medical school to be established in the city of Birmingham, England, after a period of 200 years. It is described as the most socially inclusive medical school in the UK. Prof. has discovered two protective pathways to stop preeclampsia during pregnancy. Their saying is simple ”One Test. One Pill. Save Two Lives.”

In this week’s episode we are joined by Prof. Nizam Mamode, a world leading transplant surgeon who shares his journey from the very beginning.
We delve into being rejected from medical school to traveling abroad for a gap year as a teacher. We come to learn how one unfortunate night after a bomb blast in Kenya, Nairobi killed and injured so many people cemented his desire and drive to become a doctor as he helped those that were injured. Prof. Mamode discusses his training pathway to becoming a transplant surgeon and performing the UK’s first ever Robotic Kidney Transplant surgery. We discuss the importance of pursuing a speciality you truly love and how he manages a healthy work-life balance. We discuss the advances of transplant surgery alongside the difficulties the specialty has faced since its inception touching on what they future may hold.
Mr Nizam Mamode is a Professor of Transplant Surgery with a special interest in antibody incompatible transplantation, living donors and robotic transplantation. His team have the largest programme in Europe, with around 50 paediatric transplants a year. He set up the only paediatric antibody incompatible transplantation programme and laparoscopic living donor programme, which has now carried out over 1,500 donor nephrectomies.
Prof. Mamode performed the UK’s first robotic transplant. He has published over 70 papers, one book and three book chapters on transplantation. Mr Mamode is on the editorial board for the journal ‘Transplantation’ as well as an expert reviewer for the Centre for Evidence in Transplantation and a reviewer for the American Journal of Transplantation, Transplant International and Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation.

Miss Jess McMicking is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. Jess underwent her specialist training in Sydney, Australia. She has a wealth of experience, specialising in pre-existing and gestational diabetes, nutritional conditions, high-risk obstetrics, menstrual disorders and benign gynaecology. Jess leads on numerous service projects, in addition to publishing internationally recognised articles and presenting at worldwide conferences. Jess is a passionate educator and supervisor to specialty trainees and King’s College medical students. She has recently founded a virtual platform ‘Covid Medical Education’ which provides regular lectures to over 1,000 medical students across the UK and Ireland.

Sofia is a GP PA (physician associate) and successful entrepreneur. She is the Founder of Matrix Education, a company she set up to push the boundaries and help PAs become the best they can, after struggling with her PA national exams herself. Her company developed the first app for physician associates in the UK and sold out on all spaces available for their OSCE courses in 2020. In addition to medicine, she is a professional photographer, has a passion for intentional living, productivity and self development of which she talks about on her youtube channel.
