Dr Syed talks gives us a frank and honest account of the tedious application process, the many sacrifices he had to make and if the grass really is greener on the other side. We spend some time discovering the many hidden challenges of transitioning to the US and the why he co-founded Liberty Medics to help and guide other students and doctors across the globe.

Usama Syed is a doctor who graduated from Imperial College London in 2016 and chose to decline his AFP job at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital in favour of pursuing residency training in the US. He is currently a Chief Resident in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York. He co-founded the educational company ‘LibertyMedics’, who’s mission it is to inform and guide medical students/ doctors from around the world how to transition their medical careers successfully to the United States.

In this week’s episode we are joined by Dr Yezen an IMT trainee and founder of Quesmed. Join us as he shares his journey from the very beginning discussing the achievements and obstacles he has faced to date in his career. We delve into how he discovered his passion for medical education and the skillset and experience he has since developed. Dr Yezen shares with us the story behind founding Quesmed and why it has proven to be such a popular exam bank in recent times. We discuss the different modalities of medical education in this new era and what the future will look like. We end by sharing some tips on how we can all get involved in medical education from a very basic level even at medical school.
Dr Yezen Sammaraiee is an internal medicine trainee at St. Thomas’ Hospital and founder at Quesmed.com. He qualified from UCL Medical School in 2016 with a first class iBSc in neuroscience. During his time at medical school, he founded a number of sustainable peer assisted learning initiatives, publishing and presenting a number of medical education projects in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences. As a foundation doctor in the North Central London Deanery, he successfully completed a PGCERT in Medical Education with a distinction in Technology Enhanced Education. Following this, he completed a Clinical Research Fellowship in Stroke Medicine and Neurology at University College London Hospital before returning to training.

In this week’s episode we talk to Abdel, a final year medical student from UCL who shares his journey into medical school and Google. Tune is as we discover his passion for coding and how early mornings and long hours was the key to founding a startup which was incubated at Facebook. We discover how a highly competitive internship at Google finally made him realise how much he loved the role of a product manager, as he now embarks on his new career path. Abdel shares with us the moment when he nearly lost the opportunity to do an MSc in computer science and the steps he took to eventually secure a place.
In this episode, hear the tips and tricks on how to get into coding, secure internships and the grit it took to turn a No into a Yes.
Abdel Mahmoud is an incoming Google product manager and final year medical student at UCL. His previous startup was incubated at Facebook when doing an MSc in computer science. Prior to that he graduated Sandhurst as the youngest infantry army officer in the UK at age 19. Abdel also founded and presided over UCLs first Leadership and Management Soceity. His sports and hobbies include represented UCL nationally for triathlon and completing an Ironman.

Dr Alex Young is a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon by training and founder/CEO at Virti and NHS Innovation Fellow, on a mission to improve human performance and training through technology. Alex built and sold his first company whilst at medical school and went on to scale an award-winning medical education company internationally from his bedroom while still training in the NHS using self-taught coding skills. Alex has won multiple awards with Virti including the VR Healthcare Award at The VR Awards, Royal College of Surgeons’ Edinburgh Triennial Surgical Innovation Prize and the Association of Medical Education Technology Prizes. Alex is the host of the Human Performance podcast and also writes for Forbes and Entrepreneur.
