In this week’s episode we talk to Abdel, a final year medical student from UCL who shares his journey into medical school and Google. Tune is as we discover his passion for coding and how early mornings and long hours was the key to founding a startup which was incubated at Facebook. We discover how a highly competitive internship at Google finally made him realise how much he loved the role of a product manager, as he now embarks on his new career path. Abdel shares with us the moment when he nearly lost the opportunity to do an MSc in computer science and the steps he took to eventually secure a place.
In this episode, hear the tips and tricks on how to get into coding, secure internships and the grit it took to turn a No into a Yes.
Abdel Mahmoud is an incoming Google product manager and final year medical student at UCL. His previous startup was incubated at Facebook when doing an MSc in computer science. Prior to that he graduated Sandhurst as the youngest infantry army officer in the UK at age 19. Abdel also founded and presided over UCLs first Leadership and Management Soceity. His sports and hobbies include represented UCL nationally for triathlon and completing an Ironman.

Dr Mohsin Ghor graduated in 2014 and is a Cosmetic and Aesthetic Dentist working in London. He has a passion for providing high end cosmetic care for his patients, transforming their smiles and enhancing facial beauty. Whilst striving for excellence each day in his profession, Mohsin also loves to teach younger professionals, helping them along their career path. He hopes to one day teach on a larger scale whilst excelling in his field of cosmetic dentistry.

Dr Alex Young is a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon by training and founder/CEO at Virti and NHS Innovation Fellow, on a mission to improve human performance and training through technology. Alex built and sold his first company whilst at medical school and went on to scale an award-winning medical education company internationally from his bedroom while still training in the NHS using self-taught coding skills. Alex has won multiple awards with Virti including the VR Healthcare Award at The VR Awards, Royal College of Surgeons’ Edinburgh Triennial Surgical Innovation Prize and the Association of Medical Education Technology Prizes. Alex is the host of the Human Performance podcast and also writes for Forbes and Entrepreneur.

Tune in as she shares her story of why she chose to pursue medicine and the challenges she had to overcome to finally get a place at medical school. We learn how she developed a growth mindset and kept trying despite being rejected twice. Aysha shares why she founded Muslimah after experiencing the difficulties of attending to her five daily prayers. Often having to resort to praying in public or missing it altogether due to the limited exposure to female friendly prayer spaces.
We delve into the process of how she took Muslimah from concept into reality to help solve a problem many Muslim women face on a daily basis without any previous experience, technology background or startup capital. Aysha shares the importance of seeking help and why we should take the leap of faith and get started with our ideas. As a result she won the idea factory competition and even presented Muslimah to Her Majesty the Queen.

Dr Aaniya Sherwani is a UK born medical doctor who graduated from Imperial College London in 2018. Having completed her foundation training in the NHS, she has decided to challenge herself by pursuing a career in healthcare product management which she hopes will combine her clinical & creative selves. She currently works as an advisor to health-tech startups and is developing a passion project on the side - “The Brainy Co” - a social venture creating thoughtfully designed apparel to fund global access to education.
